Description

In 1998, while making a wildlife documentary for the BBC, Chris Packham ventured deep into the thick jungle of the tropical island of Sumatra in Indonesia. (The footage still exists today).

Here he had a once in a lifetime meeting with the Orang Kubu, a tribe of nomadic hunters and gatherers that lived in the ancient forests along with the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutans and the Sumatran rhino.

For him, these people were perfection, completely in tune and in balance with their habitat. As Chris confesses “these few people were the only ‘people’ I’ve ever really liked, they were perfect”.

They were an inspiration to him then and now, and have influenced his views going forward on how the human species cannot just live in harmony with the natural world but be defined by it.
