Jarowskij Finland for MTV
Maria always dreamed of being a lawyer but ended up as the Chief of the Homicide Unit in the suburb of Espoo, Helsinki in Southern Finland. She swore she would never date a cop but ended up falling in love with a colleague. Maria wants to start a family but knows that as a detective she is always risking her own safety. She is afraid of making bad decisions yet finds herself in emotional turmoil.
In each episode, Maria Kallio is faced with a new murder case. Each case reflects a problem within Finnish society, a society often classed as the happiest in the world. As a detective, Maria Kallio uses her instincts to make decisions and understand the killer’s motive. She knows that every murderer leaves a trace, and the trace will eventually lead Maria Kallio to the killer. Maria prioritises her work above everything else in her life. This trait makes her a perfect detective, but when the murder is solved, she is incapable of playing the leading role in her own life.
In season 3, Maria Kallio has completed her final exams and graduated from the Faculty of Law. Her life feels balanced and she is at last in a good place after her divorce. Maria heads up the homocide police department, with detectives Koivu and Beaktas on her team. They are investigating the murder of a Polish businessman, and who turns out to be the husband of a Finnish diplomat.
In the middle of the investigation, Maria and Beaktas are transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation to examine international organised crime. Maria quickly realises her mission is to find the mole in the police force who, has been leaking information, allegedly covering the tracks of a Polish criminal league in Finland.
While Maria is investigating other people’s secrets, she must face a tough fact: she has more hidden secrets in her own past than anyone under her investigation.
