Description

Definitely for Channel 4

In this authored film, Gemma Collins is exploring a very poignant and personal subject, as she reveals her previous battle with self-harming. Gemma is used to sharing her most intimate moments with the public, but her struggle with self-harm is something she’s kept hidden until now, as she looks to confront the issue, onscreen, with a professional therapist for the very first time, and help others across Britain who are going through the same experiences.

The U.K. has the highest self-harm rate in all of Europe, and self-harm rates have trebled in the past 20 years, whilst the percentage of victims who don’t seek help is shockingly high. Gemma is hoping that by sharing her story she can raise awareness of these alarming statistics and encourage people to reach out for help.

Gemma used to cut her wrists with a knife in her twenties as a way to deal with dark thoughts after developing low self-esteem and self-loathing. At the time she kept her problem hidden from her friends and family and didn’t seek professional help. She has since got her life back on track, but the impact and emotional scars last a lifetime. So in this documentary we’ll see Gemma discussing her struggle with friends and family, and meeting survivors, support groups, and expert campaigners to shine a light on this hidden epidemic.
