Description

A Scenery Production

This feature length documentary follows a group of gifted Ukrainian dancers who live and dance in exile. Dancing gives them a purpose, it is a means of protest, yet at the same time they are pushing their physical limits trying to ward off feelings of guilt towards their families and their fellow Ukrainians, who are physically in combat to defend their country.

While performing in Washington D.C. Alex, one of the leading ballet dancers, meets Oleksandr, a front-line soldier, who lost both his legs in battle on the border with Russia. A friendship forms and Oleksandr is welcomed into the ballet company. He too wants to dance despite his disability and is driven by a belief that he’s still capable of anything.

The devastation of the war is ever present through video calls between the dancers and their family members, who are still fighting on the frontline. The dancers feel a deep sense of survivor’s guilt, which is amplified by Oleksandr’s condition.

Through creating choreography and performing together, The United Ukranian Ballet Company aim to diminish the space between the front row and the front-line.
