For 20 years, he was the most wanted fugitive in the world: Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, a.k.a. Carlos “The Jackal”. A man responsible for the death of “more than 2,000 victims” – a statement he likes to make a point of saying while introducing himself – even if only 16 have been officially proven.

Over a three year period, journalist Sophie Bonnet went to visit him at Poissy jail in the suburbs of Paris. Each month she spent five hours with someone who became the most notorious political terrorist of his era and whose FBI case files remain open. Through his own words we are given a unique portrait of a man responsible for the birth of international terrorism.

Simultaneously the film discovers the secret story of Carlos from those who know him, such as his family and comrades as well as those tasked with bringing him to justice. Who was this man and what goes on inside the mind of someone who can shoot people in cold blood, strangle others with his bare hands and place bombs in crowded places?
